Pallas's Long-tongued Bat
(Glossophaga soricina) |
Glossophaga soricina occurs in tropical lowlands through the Americas, from northern Mexico south to Bolivia and northern Argentina; also in Jamaica, Trinidad, and Grenada in the Caribbean. It inhabits forests and rural areas, and roosts in caves and man-made structures; sometimes in groups over a thousand. This species is nectarivorous, but apart from pollen and nectar, it also consumes flower parts, fruit, and insects. G. soricina has a long, extendable tongue for probing into flowers, and fast metabolism. It weighs ca. 9-11 g.
